Organ transplantation numbers are spiralling.

So are associated healthcare costs!

Here's how Intelligent Assistants can help reduce the ever-increasing cost of post-transplant healthcare.

Everywhere, increasing numbers of kidney and liver patients are being transplanted and living for longer post-transplant. US transplanted kidney and liver graft survivors now number over 400,000. By 2028 this is forecast to exceed 750,000. A yearly compound growth rate of over 12%.

Number of US-based Kidney Transplants

10 years ago transplanted kidney numbers were increasing at a sleepy and manageable 5% each year; today, it's more like 8% with a consistent 9% within reach

Similar transplant growth rates are being achieved in Europe and Asia.

With post-transplant survival times increasing along with transplantation numbers, it's inevitable that post transplantation healthcare costs will rise as shown in the chart opposite.

The red line charts costs based on the American Society of Nephrologists recommended schedule of patient interactions, post-transplant.

By 2032 US healthcare costs post-transplant will exceed $6 Bn of which $5 Bn will be funded by HMO's, other health insurers and patient co-pay. Cumulatively, over 10 years, healthcare costs post-transplant will exceed $45 Bn.

Similar percentage increases will also be experienced in Europe and Asia.

Managing and reducing escalating healthcare costs requires a new breed of patient-focused digital Apps, such as Intelligent Assistants. The green line shows improved cost performance of up to 50% using Intelligent Assistants.

Designed to monitor patients' daily health data and give timely data insights, Intelligent Assistants reduce the need for direct patient interaction by using AI to monitor and forecast patient drug levels and coach dose adherence.

Longer term, Intelligent Assistants will allow patients to become health data's new interpreters and a significant monitoring presence in the battle to reduce post-transplant healthcare costs.
